Sustainabilty

Since our founding, research and development in sustainable site design has been at the core of our office protocol across all phases of work. Landscape design and planning necessarily include the process of regenerating systems—social, economic, and ecological—and these systems are unique to each place.

We bring experience with LEED and the Sustainable Sites Initiative but also with local and regional requirements. We don’t use a checklist, but tie our efforts to the programmatic needs of each project and realistic budgets of each client, whether public or private.

Planted systems and biophilic design are cornerstones of our work. Over the last two decades we have been increasing the urban forest canopy significantly in communities around the world. By making planted systems and trees an integrated and striking part of our work, we aim to connect people to nature and to open the public up to new possibilities for recreation, wellness, stewardship and learning.

We see the landscape as a single, living system of interdependency that is born of nature and culture. Our expertise in systems thinking and landscape architectural detailing has allowed us to innovate green solutions in seemingly impossible circumstances. We are committed to sustainability and the artful balance of urban nature, and performance landscape that also creates a sense of place.
